Interview with Izzy Shepherd

This week we caught up with Dramacube actor Izzy Shepherd who has been nominated at this years' Richmond Arts Swan Awards.

Izzy congratulations on receiving your nomination for the Richmond Arts Swan Awards in the category of Best Girl Performer aged 14 and under.

Which show were you nominated for and which role did you play?

I was nominated for Elf Junior and my role was playing Jovie.  Jovie is the love interest of Buddy the Elf.  My character has no sense of Christmas spirit but when she meets Buddy, he helps her to find some.

Being nominated for Best Girl Performer is a huge achievement. Can you explain how you prepared for the role and what you did to create your character?

I read through the script a few times and watched the film so I could really understand the character.  I found it easier to be 'Jovie' when I was in costume.  Attending the rehearsals and practicing with the other performers was fun and helpful for learning my lines and cues.

Playing a principle role often requires lots of line learning. What techniques did you use to learn your lines and can you offer any top tips?

I practiced my lines each day.  I took my script to school and practiced with my friends at lunch time.  Learning the lines before mine helped me a lot so I knew when to come in with my next line.

Did you have many songs to learn in the show and which was your favourite?

I had 6 songs to learn and my favourite was 'Never fall in love with an Elf'.

What did you enjoy most about the rehearsal process?

It was really fun to meet up with the other performers each week to practice.  I enjoyed going over all the dances and songs for the show. It was fun to use the props to make the character come to life.  The costumes really helped to get fully into character.

What did you enjoy most about performing at Hampton Hill Theatre?

Being on the stage was an amazing feeling and looking out at the audience was exhilarating.  Behind the curtains in the backstage area was very exciting as everyone was buzzing around getting ready and there was a hum of nervousness and excitement.

We done again for receiving your nomination and we wish you the very best of luck at the Swan Awards ceremony.
